"A Dissertation on the American Justice System By People Who Have Never Been Inside A Courtroom, Let Alone Know Anything About the Law, But Have Seen Way too Many Legal Thrillers"
Since ABC had abandoned the original pilot for CLERKS, they used Episode #4 as the premiere episode. CLERKS premiered a half hour after Survivor and at the same time as the NBA Finals. One ABC station in Minnisota even ran a rerun of Home Improvement in CLERKS' place (the one where Tim & Jill catch Brad with marijuana). The show recieved mixed reviews on the internet from fans who were actually aware that the show had debuted.
The show begins with Randal taking on Dante's responsibilities at the Quick Stop. However, after only a minute of working there, the store is nearly destroyed. While cleaning the mess, Randal tosses a soda can for the garbage and misses, spilling all over the floor. When Jay & Silent Bob come in, Jay slips on the spilled soda and fall flat on his back. He decides to sue Dante & the Quick Stop for ten million dollars after Dante refuses to give him some free smokes.
With Judge Reinhold presiding, and Randal as his defense attorney, Dante doesn't have a prayer of winning the case. Randal's comments offend the jury, consisting entirely of NBA all stars, and his witnesses, consisting of, among others, George Lucas and a hot girl he met at the mall, contribute absolutely nothing to Dante's case leaving the prosecution without any reason to make a case. Only an anonymous tip has any chance of saving Dante from eternal pennance.
But, of course, the tip doesn't pay off and Dante is doomed to loose the case to Jay's high-powered lawyer. Luckily for him, the end of the script was lost on its way overseas. So the rest of the episode was finished by the Korean animators. Suddenly, reality is warped into a voidless dimension where movement through time/space in fluid motion is impossible. Together, Dante, Randal, Reinhold, Axle, Tom Cruise, Sailor Moon, & Pikachu must save the animators.
